Setting Up The Canvas to Synergy Sync with Differentiated Grading Categories and/or Weights

In the following materials you will learn how to set up weighted grading categories in Canvas and link them to corresponding categories in Synergy, thus allowing for a successful sync between the two platform's grade books.

Please note, in this process you will learn how to create new categories in Canvas and assign a weight to it. Then we will create or use a pre-existing category in Synergy and assign a weight to that category as well. It is no longer required that the naming convention of the grading category in Canvas match exactly the naming convention of the grading category in Synergy as the third element you will learn is how to establish the lasting sync from your now set up grading categories in both Canvas and Synergy.

Please note that if you are using differentiated categories, but NOT using weights, simply set up the Canvas portion as below but without activating the weights, do not set the weights in Synergy, and when it comes to syncing the SIS Categories in Canvas, simply select Assignments for all categories in Canvas.

Troubleshooting:

Assignments only sync if all the following conditions are met:

It is past the due date.
Sync has been activated for the assignment (visible by a small green check on the Assignments tab)
At least one student has received a grade.

Often a quick fix is to Remaster the grades, open your Grade Sync menu on the left in your course, go to Utilities, and click Remaster Grade Passback. This tells Canvas to not look for changes made to grades, but instead, sync everything.

Common Rationale for Assignments Not Syncing:

The above criteria weren’t met.
The categories in Canvas weren’t linked to the Assignment types in Synergy.
Your extra credit is out of 0 in Canvas. Synergy will not take /0. EC must be given on an assignment as an overage such as 11/10, etc.
You have synced but are not seeing changes- Click on the Grade Sync tab in your course and there you can see details of your sync by clicking on the status. Note that the sync is not instant, it can sometimes take up to 2 hours for a sync to complete on both ends, depending on how many people are syncing at once and other variables.
